Update from the Houston Calf Scramble

March 31, 2015  For the past year The Rhodes Group has been closely following the story of Eduardo Concha and his heifer, Angela Blanca. At the 2014 Houston Livestock Show Eduardo was able to wrangle and harness a calf in the Calf Scramble Competition, earning him a certificate for the purchase of a registered beef heifer. His luck at the Calf Scramble also earned him a spot at the 2015 Livestock Show, where Angela placed 4th in the Calf Scramble Progress Show and 3rd in the Junior Show for Charolais breeding heifers. In between shows, there was a year of early mornings, hard work and dedication. Rhodes Group staff members, who donated portions of their “Jean Friday” charity fund to sponsor the Calf Scramble, enjoyed receiving monthly updates from Eduardo on his progress with Angela. Eduardo is a high school senior from Lufkin, TX who plans to major in mechanical engineering and hopes to one day own his own ranch. His participation in the Houston Livestock Show makes him eligible for several scholarship opportunities. Currently, more than 2,100 students are on Show scholarships, attending more than 100 different Texas colleges and universities. The value of these scholarships is approximately $40 million.
