Rhodes Group Promotes Ivonne Beltran Parks, Welcomes Marc Moatz

January 31, 2015  The Rhodes Group recently promoted Ivonne Beltran Parks, CCP to Senior Consultant.  Ivonne has been a member of The Rhodes group since 2005, and she specializes in the analysis and quantification of construction related damages.  Drawing on her accounting background, she conducts complex construction cost analyses on multi-million and multi-billion projects.  Ivonne is a Certified Cost Professional.

The Rhodes Group also welcomed Marc Moatz, Esq. as a Project Consultant.   Marc earned his Juris Doctorate from Duquesne University School of Law.  While in law school he focused his studies on courses related to construction law and developed strong research and analytical skills, which he draws upon in the analysis of construction project issues.  Before starting his legal studies, Marc worked for nearly 10 years in residential construction and has firsthand knowledge and appreciation of the construction industry.

Michael Birmingham and Andrew Rhodes Present at EPC Contract and Risk Management Conference

January 20, 2015  Michael Birmingham and Andrew Rhodes presented at the 2nd EPC Contract and Risk Management held in Houston, January 13-15.  Michael led an interactive workshop on cost-reimbursable contracts that included Bart Turner of KBR And Brian Davidson of DLF Legal.    In addition to their role as conference chairs, Andrew and Brian co-moderated a panel discussion on Gauging the Impact the Current State of the Energy Industry is Having on EPC Contracting.   Panelist included Shelley Smithson of Sasol and Eileen Akerson of KBR.

Rhodes Group Welcomes New Consultant and General Counsel

July 31, 2014  The Rhodes Group recently hired Dave Abijanac as Senior Consultant.  Dave has over 20 years of experience in the engineering and construction industry.  Drawing on his legal background and industry experience, Dave will assist in the development of and defense against construction claims.  Prior to joining The Rhodes Group, Dave worked as a construction attorney and litigator for Powell, Trachtman, Logan, Carrle & Lombardo, where his practice focused on the representation of architects and engineers.   Dave’s industry experience includes working at an international design engineering and construction firm, where he held numerous positions and roles within project management, purchasing/procurement, expediting and administration.   He also served as a contracts administrator and as a law clerk for in-house counsel.  Dave graduated magna cum laude from Robert Morris University with a B.S.B.A in Finance, and he earned his Juris Doctorate from the Duquesne University School of Law.  In addition to his role as Senior Consultant at The Rhodes Group, Dave will also serve as the firm’s general counsel.

Rhodes Group Pittsburgh Marathon Team Raises over $2,000 for Wounded Warriors

Rhodes Group at the Rodeo

March 14, 2014 Earlier this month Rhodes Group President Andrew Rhodes and Vice President Shawn Modar attended the 2014 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, along with Texas-native Jordan Robertson, a project consultant at The Rhodes Group. Rhodes and Modar are leading the firm’s new Houston office, which opened in January of this year. The Rhodes Group was proud to be a donor for the calf scramble, which provides students lucky enough to catch a calf with a chance to earn a significant amount of money toward their college education by raising, showing and auctioning their calf at next year’s rodeo. The Rhodes Group’s donation was funded by employee contributions to a “Jean Friday” fund.

Rhodes Group Opens Houston Office

March 10, 2014  In January of this year The Rhodes Group opened an office in Houston, TX. The addition of the Houston office was a natural progression following a significant increase in business from clients based in the Gulf Coast region. Rhodes Group Announces Several Staff Promotions

February 10, 2014 

The Rhodes Group recently announced several promotions.

Laura Arrigo, CCP, PSP was promoted to Project Executive. Laura has been a member of The Rhodes Group for over 10 years. As Project Executive, Laura will direct the analysis of schedule delay and disruption claims, in addition to assisting clients with managing schedule and cost risk during the course of construction. Laura has extensive experience consulting on large-scale construction projects in the U.S. and abroad, including liquefied natural gas and power generation facilities, as well as projects involving the construction of professional sports stadiums, university buildings, and high-rise buildings.

Donald Kaplan, CCP, PSP was promoted to Project Manager. Donald has worked with The Rhodes Group for eight years and is a senior member of The Rhodes Group’s CPM scheduling department. In addition to helping clients develop and maintain CPM schedules, Donald is experienced in the forensic analysis of schedule delays and disruptions. He has consulted on a diverse group of projects, ranging from casinos to chemical processing plants.

Nathan McNeil was promoted to Project Manager. Since joining The Rhodes Group in 2010, Nathan has consulted on several ongoing mega-projects, including LNG and power generation facilities located in the U.S., Africa and Australia. He assists clients with the identification, assessment and management of schedule and cost risk, as well as the analysis of schedule delays and disruptions in formal disputes.

Additionally, James Turner recently earned Six Sigma Lean and DFSS Green Belt certification. Turner has led several Lean events at the firm, resulting in The Rhodes Group becoming a finalist for the 2014 PHRA People Do Matter Award in the Work Structure and Processes category. The awards ceremony will be held Wednesday, March 19th, when winners will be announced.

Rhodes Group Welcomes Damages Expert Laura Miller

October 16, 2013  The Rhodes Group today announced that Laura Miller will join the firm as Director.  Laura is a CPA and expert in construction-related damages who will augment the Rhodes Group’s existing cadre of testifiers and construction consultants. She has testified 18 times on damages issues as an expert witness and is experienced in issues involving terminations, defaults, limitations under Federal Acquisition Regulations and the integration of damages with schedule impacts. Ms. Miller has worked on projects ranging from nuclear construction to power plants and public housing.

Michael Birmingham Presenting to CAWP CLC Emerging Leaders

October 7, 2013  Michael Birmingham, a director and expert witness with The Rhodes Group, will be presenting on “Necessary Claims Considerations on a Troubled Project.”  The Emerging Leader Education Program is sponsored by the CAWP Constructors Leadership Council (CLC).  This ongoing education program is one of the CLC’s key elements in reaching out to tomorrow’s industry leaders.  The October 17th presentation is open to Emerging leaders of all CAWP contractor and associate member companies.

This diverse group will discuss the identification and management of risk with a focus on the entire life cycle of large-scale EPC projects. We asked the panelists to discuss their perspectives and experiences on megaprojects and wanted to share the insights of these industry leaders.

Rhodes Expert Michael Birmingham Participating in Forum Trial Academy

June 11, 2013  Michael Birmingham, a director and expert witness with The Rhodes Group, will be will be participating as an expert consultant at the ABA Forum on the Construction Industry’s Trial Academy. This is the second year The Rhodes Group has participated in the Trial Academy, which begins tomorrow and will take place at the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. The three-day intensive trial skills training program will use two different dispute scenarios to teach the skills that are needed to successfully try a construction dispute. The faculty is made up of experienced construction litigators who have tried construction cases in courts and before arbitration panels in jurisdictions throughout the country. Students will also work with construction experts so they can learn how to prepare expert witnesses, as well as conduct effective direct and cross examinations of technical witnesses. The course will consummate with participants conducting a mock trial of a construction case.

Michael Birmingham has directed and conducted the analysis of schedule delay and disruption and termination claims on hundreds of projects, and he has testified to schedule delays and disruptions in court and arbitration. He specializes in Critical Path Method (CPM) schedule delay and disruption analysis, the quantification and analysis of delay and loss of productivity related damages, and the development and maintenance of CPM schedules.

Birmingham and Fallon Speak at AIA-MBA Joint Committee Meeting

May 23, 2013 Michael Birmingham and Erin Fallon presented to the AIA-MBA Joint Committee on May 22nd in Pittsburgh.   Using a “Troubled Project” case study as the presentation backdrop, Birmingham and Fallon outlined some schedule and cost analysis considerations when presenting a schedule delay claim and the related damage quantification.   The AIA-MBA Joint Committee provides a unique forum for Architects, General Contractors and Owners to meet and discuss existing conditions of the construction industry.

Two Rhodes Professionals Earn PSP Credential

January 11 , 2013 Jeffrey Hogan and Jonathan Medsger were recently been credentialed as Planning & Scheduling Professionals (PSP) by the Association for the Advancement of Cost Engineers International (AACE).  The PSP designation recognizes specialists who meet a demanding set of planning and scheduling criteria by a rigorous examination, experience, education and ethical qualifications.  Hogan was also recently promoted to Senior Consultant.

DRG Welcomes Two New Members

October 31 , 2012

DRG welcomed two new members to its consulting team. James Keefer and Jordan Robertson were hired as Project Consultants. Both Keefer and Robertson were part of DRG’s Summer 2012 intern program, designed to introduce graduate and undergraduate engineering students to the construction consulting field.  Keefer recently graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering.  Robertson graduated from Virginia Tech with an MBA and Masters of Science in Civil Engineering. He also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Texas A&M University.  As Project Consultants, Robertson and Keefer will assist in the analysis of construction delays and disruptions.

James Turner Promoted to Project Consultant

James Turner was promoted to Project Consultant.  Turner provides support for the analysis of multi-million dollar claims on complex industrial and power generation facilities.  Having worked in project controls for a global supplier of environmental technologies prior to joining DRG, Turner is experienced in claims development, analysis, documentation, and management.  His expertise also includes labor productivity and forensic schedule analysis.

“Upcycle” Supply Drive Benefits Pittsburgh Students

DRG recently participated in a pilot “Upcycle” supply drive, collecting new and lightly used office and school supplies for The Education Partnership’s core program. The program serves over 5,200 young people in the local Pittsburgh community. DRG staff purged their offices of notebooks, rulers, staplers, binders, scissors and other supplies no longer in use, filling several large boxes for donation to The Education Partnership. “It’s great to see items that might otherwise hit the trash bin or that are just taking up space be put to such good use,” said one staff member. Leroy Trimbath to participate in ABA Forum on the Construction Industry Trial Academy

Leroy Trimbath Qualifies as Certified Construction Auditor

Leroy Trimbath, a Director and Expert Witness with DRG, has qualified as a Certified Construction Auditor (CCA) through the National Association of Construction Auditors (NACA). The CCA designation recognizes accounting, auditing and consulting professionals whose primary experience is in the field of auditing and evaluating internal controls in the construction project environment. Mr. Trimbath’s 35+ years in the construction industry includes serving as the Chief Financial Officer for a $250-million general contractor. He specializes in the review, reconciliation and evaluation of construction costs and contract amounts, and the analysis and calculation of construction related delay and disruption damages. Mr. Trimbath is also credentialed as a Certified Construction Financial Industry Professional (CCIFP).

“Fun with Facial Hair” Raises $1,000 for Children with Cancer

March 16, 2012

In its first annual “Fun with Facial Hair” Fundraiser, DRG staff raised money to benefit St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a volunteer-driven charity committed to funding the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long and healthy lives. Jeffrey Hogan, Christopher Jones, Jonathan Medsger, and James Turner offered their facial hair up to the mercy of their colleagues, who purchased tickets to vote on beard and mustache styles for each participant. The winning look was sported for a day, to the amusement of friends and colleagues alike. While the fundraiser was all in good fun, staff contributions and DRG-matched donations totaled $1,000.

Ryan Mocniak Joins DRG’s Consulting Team

Previously, Ryan worked at FTI Consulting where he analyzed construction claims, assessed construction costs and damages, and provided litigation support. Most recently, Ryan was part of a mining restart project, where he played an integral role with project controls support and change order management.

DRG Teams with Education Partnership to Provide Much Needed Supplies

On January 28th, members of DRG joined The Education Partnership for one of its four annual school supply distribution events. Volunteers assisted local school teachers who “shopped” for around $400 worth of free school and classroom supplies for their students and their classrooms. The Education Partnership works year-round to collect critical supplies to provide to over 5,000 students in the greater Pittsburgh area.
