Last fall The Rhodes Group’s Pittsburgh office welcomed high school senior Yasha Breslove from City Charter High School. Rhodes Group vice president Shawn Modar, P.E. acted as Yasha’s mentor and worked with marketing manager Sarah Shaffer to develop a program that allowed Yasha to explore his interest in several different engineering fields.

As a part of Yasha’s internship, he acted as the general contractor for the construction of a Chrysler Building replica made entirely of specialized wooden microbeams (matchsticks). Yasha was required to respond to an RFP from the Owner (Shawn Modar), solicit bids from subcontractors (other Rhodes Group consultants), and develop and maintain the CPM project schedule using Primavera P6 (guided by CPM Scheduler Shannon Lewis). The mock project allowed Yasha to see the level of planning and coordination involved in the construction process and to gain first-hand experience addressing some of the issues The Rhodes Group sees on a daily basis, namely schedule delays and disruptions.

Yasha also had the opportunity to visit an active construction site, thanks to Gus Just of architecture and construction management firm Astorino. Gus gave Yasha a tour of a project underway at West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh, where Yasha was able to learn about the design process and to see how everything comes together. The tour also piqued his interest in Building Information Modeling (BIM), an interest Yasha plans to explore more in the future.

Yasha will graduate in May and is currently planning to major in engineering. He has been accepted to several schools, including the University Honors College at the University of Pittsburgh and George Mason University.
